NEW DELHI: At least seven persons feared to have drowned in two different parts of Delhi during Durga idol immersions on Saturday. While the bodies of six of the victims were fished out soon after the incident, search operations for one missing teenager continued late into Saturday night.
Fire officials said that the first of these deaths occurred on the banks of Yamuna in Chauhan Patti in north-east Delhi's Sonia Vihar around 11 am. We received a call around that time, soon after which we rushed three fire tenders to the spot.
"My 13-year-old nephew, Himanshu, had gone there along with his family members when the incident took place. I along with my son reached a little later. As soon as we did, we noticed Himanshu was swept away in the Yamuna river suddenly. A friend of him also drowned along with him. We think their feet slipped while they were playing along the river," said Kiran, a resident of Sonia Vihar.
A search operation was launched by the divers and the rescue teams deployed there for such tragedies which have now become a regular occurrence. The two bodies were fished out in sometime and sent for post-mortem.
The second accident struck a group of teenagers who had visited the Yamuna near Palla Village in outer Delhi. Fire officers said six teenagers had entered the river for the rituals. "They were all swept away by the string current, but two of them managed to swim to safety," said a fire officer.
Fire officials said that they received a call about this incident around 4.30 pm. The bodies of three youths were fished out and a search is on for the fourth missing youth. "The dead boys were aged between 13 and 16," said a police officer, adding the dead were found to be residents of East Punjabi Bagh.
The third victim is an unidentified girl whose body was fished out from the waters in Chauhan Patti in Sonia Vihar around 7.30 pm, the same place where two youths had drowned earlier in the day. A police officer expressed hope that it was only a matter of time before the victim would be identified.
On September 3, four youths drowned in three different parts of the city during Ganesh immersions. While two children drowned in Sonia Vihar, the same place where three youths drowned on Saturday, one each had been swept away in waters in Shastri Park and Bawana, respectively.
