President Trump is seeking to shut down the Taliban’s political office in Qatar, arguing it failed to help the peace process in Afghanistan.
This comes after a Qatari official revealed the Obama administration helped establish a Taliban political bureau in 2011 in Doha.
President Trump says negotiations with the Taliban have not produced any results, and the operation of its political office in Qatar heightens the terror threat in the region.
Some State Department officials reportedly say the Taliban office should remain open, and are pushing for more intensive talks.
The Taliban has refused any further negotiations until the U.S. withdraws forces from Afghanistan.
